Description
Seooreung is a royal mausoleumsite where five royal tombs are collectively located: Firstly, Kyeongreung, the royal tomb of the crown prince Uigyeong who was posthumously given the title of King Deokjong in 1471 and his wife Queen Sohye. Secondly, Changreung, the royal tomb of Yejong, the 8th King of the Joseon Dynasty, and his second wife Queen Ansun. Thirdly, Ikreung, the royal tomb of Queen Ingyeong who was the wife of King Sukjong, the 19th King of the Joseon Dynasty. The fourth tomb is Myeongreung, the royal tomb of King Sukjong and his second wife Queen Inhyeon and his third wife Queen Inwon, and lastly, Hongreung, the royal tomb of Queen Jeongseong, the wife of the 21st King of the Joseon Dynasty. The history of Seooreung as a royal tomb site goes back to 1457, the 3rd year of King Sejo’s reign when his eldest son Uigyeong died and a funeral and tomb suitable for a royal prince was selected according to feng shui or geomancy. Also placed here are the tombs of Soochangwon and Daebinmyo: Soonchangwon is the first crown prince tomb of the Joseon Dynasty and is the royal tomb of the crown prince Soonhoe or the first sone of the 13th King of the Joseon Dynasty. Daebinmyo is the royal tomb of Janghuibin who was a royal concubine of the 19th King of the Joseon Dynasty, and who left so many historical anecdotes. Seoreung is second only to Donggureung in size for royal family tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
