A Comfortable Resort set in Natural Surroundings
The Haengju Fortress in Goyang is the site of the battle where General Gwon-yul defeated the Japanese soldiers at the time of Imjinwaeran when the Japanese Hideyoshi invaded Korea in 1592. This war is known as the Haengjudaechub, and was one of three major wars of the period. It is related that the Korean army numbered only 2,300, whereas the Japanese had 30,000 soldiers. The name Haengju Fortress derives from the story that women carried the stones to build it in their aprons (haengjuchima), but nothing remains of the castle except its front gate. The mountain where the castle is located is called Dukyang, which is perfect for trekking. You can also look down over the beautiful scenery of the Han River while making your way up to the Dukyang pavilion at the top of the mountain, since the Fortress is located in the Han River valley.
